BIMS – BIOPRIST INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES (BIMS) TRUST LIMITED – School of Medicine and Health Professions (BIMS SOM-HP) is a non-profit entity incorporated in 2016 under the laws of Jamaica (West Indies) in the city of Montego Bay, by a very prominent Physician family with an illustrious history of committed and successful investments in the fields of medicine and healthcare in Jamaica. The founding family’s long-standing passion to establish one of the state-of-the-art medical schools in the world was further fortified by the inputs from several intellectuals of diversified clinical and academic expertise in the field of medicine from the United States, Asia and Jamaica.
The Institution was incorporated with one and only goal, to provide qualified applicants across the globe an innovative and an extraordinary training and, the opportunity to receive Doctor of Medicine – MD degree. Mirroring the American medical education, BIMS’s medical education program is modelled on those of medical schools in the United States. Consistent with the new paradigm in US medical education, BIMS-SOM-HP students commence clinical exposure from the beginning years of the preclinical years at our affiliated hospitals and clinics in Jamaica.
BIMS-SOM-HP is committed to offering ultramodern and state of the art technology driven interactive and integrated learning during the preclinical years that will enable the students gain the applied knowledge and skills from the formative years. We are very proud to announce that BIMS is the very first medical school in the Caribbean and Central America to have in-licensed the HOLOANATOMY, intellectual property from the ILLUMIS at the Case Western Reserve BIMS (SOM-HP), Cleveland-Ohio, USA that operates on the Augmented reality platform from the Microsoft Technologies. In addition to HoloAnatomy software, BIMS also made sizable investment into the plastination technology persevered human cadavers and “ANATOMAGE Table 10”, the latest version on the market that has artfully integrated learning of Anatomy, Physiology and applied anatomy at one go, positioning BIMS as the very first and the top medical school in the Caribbean offering the dual technology platforms in the medical education.
The institution will also certainly take the pride of having on board the experienced and capable faculty, small classes in addition to the latest technology infused into the medical education. While the provision of the clinical opportunities to our students at our affiliated clinics and hospitals during the formative years is a given, BIMS-SOMHP has pipeline of the institutions for clinical rotations for its students at some of the finest teaching hospitals in the United States, Caribbean, and Asia.

I warmly welcome the next generation of Physicians to your exciting journey at the BIMS (SOM-HP)- BIOPRIST INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES (BIMS) TRUST LIMITED – School of Medicine and Health Professions in Montego Bay Jamaica, West Indies. This is an institution built on the strong pillars of passion, intellectual capital, technology and a successful parent company and, founded by a very prominent Physician family with an illustrious history of committed and successful investments in the fields of medicine and healthcare in Jamaica.
The institution’s “Student Handbook” will guide you through the upcoming year/s covering all aspects of life at BIMS (SOM-HP) from Enrolment, Academic, Residential Services to forward planning such as clinical rotations, USMLE preparations and much more. Attention must be given to the sections covering examinations, grading and promotion as the policies and procedures are very insightful and instrumental to your career planning.
Curriculum and course syllabi were drafted, reviewed, and revised by a team of medical education experts from the medical schools in the US, Jamaica and Asia. The program at BIMS (SOM-HP) has integrated horizontally and vertically the Global MD path, preclinical and clinical science curriculum. The curriculum development has incorporated best academic practices with seamless integration of concurrent training for the USMLE steps utilizing the FIRST STEP for USMLE platform. The intellectually sound Faculty have taken the responsibility of guiding you in addition to our multiple academic and non-academic support programs complimenting your learning process at BIMS (SOM-HP).
The above-mentioned integrated course description with technology driven teaching aids such as “HOLOANATOMY and ANATOMAGE Table 10” platforms will provide you with the tools necessary to become one of the cream de la crème group of world class physicians. That said, you must take every advantage of the institution’s resources and ownership of your education and become, most likely more than you have been accustomed to, a self- directed life-long learner.
The changing dynamics at ‘The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME)’ has announced an increase in the score required to pass USMLE Step 1 by 2 points to 196 while at the same time the score obtained will not be reported. The impact of the changing dynamics, the Pass/Fail report on the selection of residents by Program Directors of residency programs is yet to be seen. BIMS (SOM-HP) is evolving its strategic approach to tackle the evolving challenges with its robust programs in guiding you towards clinical rotations and successfully enroll into residency programs.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, taking a backstep, the world has advanced in moving forward from the devastation it has caused to our professional and personal lives. Therefore, it is our collective obligation to rebuild the world’s precious resources (future healthcare professionals) whom we lost during the recent pandemic.
